Quadrant M4 is another collaboration project I worked on with Glenn Watson back in 2001-04. We recorded one album entitled "M4", which was a collection of very dark and moody ambient pieces. Our guiding aesthetic was no drums! We wanted to create an album of pure ambience and mood. Apart from one track entitled "Fields" thats exactly what we created; whilst "Fields" has some rhythmic, percussive qualities created from sampled field recordings, it does not have any drums.
The music takes the listener on a journey through strange atmospheric audio environments, either created using synthesiser textures, or from manipulated samples. What melodic elements there are exist to enhance the mood or punctuate the soundscapes with some key signifiers. There are also some sampled vocals thrown in, including some spoken word from myself.
We each created the tracks separately from shared sound sources created by both of us, whilst the final mastering polish was handled by Glenn.
Above is a video I created for one of the tracks. Again I kept this fairly minimal to allow most of the space to the music, it is more about creating a focus point whilst the music plays. The photographic elements used come from collected photographs I took in and around Swansea between 1991- 92. These were appropriate to the project since we both come from Swansea, and the title "M4" is derived from the key motorway road linking south Wales to the southern England.
